1. You can see that things are not right. Something is bothering your partner... Until you cannot stand it anymore...*

a) This kind of thing will not happen in our marriage, as we talk things through before it reaches a critical point. We learnt quickly that keeping quite doesn’t solve problems.

b) You ask your partner what is wrong and suggest that you sit down somewhere and try to sort things out like adult people. Your partner agrees and although it doesn’t go smoothly, you figure out what the problem is.

c) You think: “Oh my word, not again” and flee from the house. You are so tired of battling that you don’t even feel up to figuring out what is now wrong again. In any case, you don’t want to know.

2. It is bedtime and both of you realise that it has been quite a while since there has been sparks in the bedroom. In any case, neither of you can sleep...*

a) Before you realise it, you are on top of each other and all over each other. Neither of you will let the opportunity pass to be intimate!

b) You are not really in the mood. You are in a phase of your marriage where work tension/children/circumstances are consuming all your time. Although you know that it is just temporarily, you also realise that your marriage needs it, so you ignore your fatigue and participate in the fun.

c) You pretend to be asleep and just say: “Leave me alone, please. I am tired,” without wondering how your partner feels about your words.

3. Your old school sweetheart contacts you on Facebook and suggests that you meet somewhere for coffee.*

a) You immediately type: “It will be lovely! I cannot wait for you to meet my husband/wife!” And then you take your partner with you indeed – just to brag a little bit.

b) You ignore the invitation. You are worried that your school sweetheart will see that you are looking weary and tense – you don’t want him/her to remember you like this.

c) You hesitate for a moment before accepting the invitation and when the day finally arrives, you just shout to your partner: “Goodbye, I am going to play tennis . . .”

4. The children are asleep, the house is very quiet and you have five minutes for yourself.*

a) You immediately go onto the Internet, excited to plan a breakaway weekend for the two of you. It is nice to spoil your partner and you cannot wait to explore this romantic spot with him/her!

b) You dream about someday, when you can maybe really build that cottage at the sea. You dream about how pretty the shutters are going to look and which colour the bedroom will be. You are worried about the conflict, but you are looking forward to the possibilities.

c) You imagine that you are somebody else. A happier person, married to another person. To someone who listens to you, who respects you and who really cares about you . . .

5. The weekend is here. The children are visiting their granny and you have three days to do whatever you want to...*

a) You are sleeping late, wake each other up with kisses, and lie in each other’s arms and talk until you are worried that you will get bedsores! You decide to try out the new restaurant on the corner and thereafter you are watching movies until late at night.

b) You get up to date with the house’s admin, your partner is working in the garden and thereafter you decide to go looking for paint together. You get involved in an argument about the price, but come to an agreement and go for coffee.

c) You phone your friends and organise an overnight visit with lots of wine. Your partner goes for a round of golf and stays out until late at night. The next day both of you leave the house quickly to go to the shops (each one to a different mall) without being aware of each other’s whereabouts. After all, you don’t sleep in the same bedroom any more . . .

6. Your parents are visiting and your partner doesn’t like them. Soon it results in a heated argument!*

a) Which argument? My partner knows how much I love my parents and tolerates them for my sake – just the same way I do with my partner’s parents.

b) We fight like just we can! Sometimes a cup or two gets broken and we say things that we shouldn’t say, but later we are making up and everything is okay.

c) It gets ugly. We don’t know how to hurt each other more severe, so we get personal, insult each other and swear at each other. There is no respect left between us.

7. You are furious at your partner after you discovered that he/she was dishonest about something.*

a) You decide to calm down first and to make sure of your facts. Thereafter you choose your time carefully, pour a glass of wine for each of you and approach the topic from a sober perspective.

b) You shout at your partner. You cannot believe that he/she is once again disappointing you. You just waited for this day . . .

c) You are furious, and take the two-litre bowl with ice cream from the fridge and indulge. You won’t say anything. This is just another point against him/her – one of these points that you carefully hide and will use in the divorce case.

8. Your partner is getting extremely grey. You know that it is a sensitive matter for him/her.*

a) You don’t say a word and pretend that you don’t see it at all – you only give extra special attention.

b) You tell him/her that he/she is looking increasingly like one of your favourite salt and pepper celebrities and that you think it is very sexy!

c) You wait until you are in public again and humiliate him/her in company by saying: “Just look at this old grey man with whom I have to cope until the day when I die of boredom.”

9. You dream about managing your own business one day.*

a) Your partner dreams with you and helps you to save and plan in order to make it a reality.

b) Your partner is sceptical about your ambition and tries to convince you to tackle something else, but still says that he/she will support you in whatever you want to do.

c) Your partner doesn’t know what your dream is and doesn’t care either.

10. How will you describe your marriage?*

a) A feast. I don’t have regrets for one day, as I know that we can conquer any problem!

b) A relationship that is going uphill and downhill. Sometimes I see a future and sometimes I feel discouraged, but I persevere and flourish on the good times.

c) The dumbest mistake that I have ever made. I feel empty.
